With just a day more to the close of the player transfer window, there is sure to be a rush with teams competing to get their targets.

While some clubs like Manchester United, AC Milan, Real Madrid and PSG can be pleased with their businesses in the transfer market so far, others like Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona are still yet to secure their targets.

There have been signings here and there already, with the likes of Neymar and Ousmane Dembele making big money moves.

The transfer record for most expensive player in the world – previously held by Paul Pogba – has also been shattered twice already, with bigger moves expected in the next 24 hours.

But while some clubs have always been winners in the transfer market, others have had to deal with the pain of losing their influential players to rivals.

Pulse Sports takes a look at some of the most painful transfer poaches for clubs in recent times.

1.     Cesc Fabregas (From Arsenal to Barcelona)

The Spain midfielder rose through the ranks at Arsenal, but decided to ditch the Premier League side for his boyhood club Barcelona.

Fabregas joined Arsenal in 2003 and stayed at the Emirates until 2011, before painfully moving to Spain. His status at Arsenal grew so much that he was made captain of the side despite his relatively young age.

Till date Arsenal fans have not forgiven the 30-year-old for his decision to leave the Emirates for Barcelona. And his unpopularity grew the more after he later moved to Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea.

2.     Robin Van Persie (From Arsenal to Manchester United)

The Netherlands striker was declared public enemy no. 1 after his £20 million move to Manchester United. The 34-year-old had also spent eight fruitful years at Arsenal before being lured away by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Van Persie was undoubtedly Arsenal’s talisman before his departure, and scored a massive 96 goals from 194 appearances during his stay.

Barring his move to Manchester United, the Dutch striker would certainly be commanding legendary status at the Emirates. However, the feeling now at Arsenal is that of dislike for the former Fayernoord man.

Added to the fact that his goals the next season led Manchester United to the Premiership title angered Arsenal fans the more.

3.   Rahim Sterling (From Liverpool from Manchester City)

Manchester City’s capture of Rahim Sterling from Liverpool was a major coup. The Citizens had chased then then prodigious 19-year-old for the larger part of the summer before ultimately landing their man.

The English international broke Liverpool hearts with the move, with many describing him as a mercenary after he and his agent went to war with the Anfield club demanding a move away.

Sterling eventually had his way, with his salary being almost tripled, but till date he is still antagonized by Liverpool fans, and to think the team failed to even qualify for the Champions League the season after his departure further stoked for derision for him.

4.    Neymar (From Barcelona to PSG)

In the biggest transfer to ever happen in world football, Neymar swerved Barcelona to join French giants PSG, in a deal that also made him the highest-paid player in the world.

Neymar had been rumoured to have courted interest from Unai Emery’s side, but most Barca fans saw it as just another of those reports.

However, before they could say jack, the Brazilian star was already in Paris putting pen to paper on a five-year-deal.

It has been a bitter pill for the Barcelona fraternity, especially after he was penciled as the natural heir to Lionel Messi.

And the fans have not forgiven him since.

5.   Nemanja Matic (From Chelsea to Manchester United)

Most Chelsea fans were left fuming after it emerged that the club had agreed a £40 million deal with Manchester United for midfield dynamo Matic.

The Blues had moved to secure the services of Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko, but after watching Matic star in the Red Devils’ 4-0 win over West Ham United in their opening game of the season, Chelsea fans began to wish they had kept him.

It is a move Chelsea are really yet to regret, but the general feeling among Blues fans is that selling to a rival should not have been the case.

6.   Luis Figo (From Barcelona to Real Madrid)

The former Portugal captain played for Barcelona between 1995 and 2000, and was a toast of the fans until he committed the sacrilege of crossing over to the Bernabeu.

Figo scored 30 goals in 172 games for the Catalonia side, but will forever be remembered as a traitor following his move to Madrid.

7.   Luis Suarez (From Liverpool to Barcelona)

Liverpool fans used to adore Luis Suarez after his 31 goals nearly speared them to a first Premier League title since 1990, but his subsequent U-turn to move to Barcelona in a £75 million move hit the fans really hard.

The striker formed a formidable partnership with Daniel Sturridge and Rahim Sterling as Liverpool missed out on the trophy by just two points.

Till date the club has not been able to replace him despite signing a host of players in his position.

8.  Cristiano Ronaldo (From Manchester United to Real Madrid)

Manchester United had the best team in the world in 2008 with Cristiano Ronaldo at the forefront of that squad. The Portugal captain led the club to a league and Champions League double, but left for Real Madrid in 2009.

It is no surprise that the English club has failed to again reach such heights since Ronaldo’s departure.

And though the club’s fans still hold him a high esteem, they would certainly have felt bruised with his departure.

9.    Samir Nasri (From Arsenal to Manchester City)

France midfielder, Samir Nasri’s move to Manchester City was received very badly by many Arsenal fans. Just like Van Persie and Fabregas, Arsenal fans widely regard Nasri as a traitor who left the club for more money.

The 30-year-old worsened his case as he occasionally engaged Gunners fans in banters on social media.

10.   Ashley Cole (From Arsenal to Chelsea)

Chelsea and Arsenal are known not to have any cordial relationship on the field, but the Blues’ attempt to sign Ashley Cole behind the backs of Arsenal damaged the little good terms left.

Jose Mourinho had targeted the left-back for a long time and finally landed his man, but not without resistance from the Gunners.

At a point Chelsea were reported to FIFA and were charged with a fine for their advances which were termed “illegal”.

Since his move, Ashley Cole has been regarded by the Arsenal faithful as persona non grata and was occasionally booed anytime he returned to the Emirates with Chelsea.
